Full Member

Full Members shall have a doctoral degree or the equivalent. They may be specialists in pulmonary or critical care medicine, or other physicians, scientists or nurses interested in the purposes of the Society. The requirement of a doctoral degree may be waived for persons engaged in scientific and health fields closely related to the activities of the Society.

In-Training Member

In-Training membership is open to graduate students, doctoral students, medical students, interns, residents and fellows during their formal, documented periods of training. In-training members have all the privileges of Full Members except holding office.

In-Transition Member

In-Transition membership will be instituted on January 1, 2002. When the formal, documented period of training ends for In-Training Members, they will be upgraded automatically to the In-Transition Member category for one full year. During this year, they will have all the privileges of Full Members, but will pay reduced member dues. The following year, In-Transition Members will be upgraded automatically to the Full Member category, and will begin to pay Full Member dues, retaining all the privileges of Full Members. The purpose of the one-year In-Transition membership category is to reduce the financial burden of adjusting from In-Training to Full membership.

Senior Member

Full Members who are totally retired, or individuals who have the presence of an income limiting permanent disability may apply for adjustment to the Senior Member category. Senior Members have all the privileges of Full Members with the exception of holding office.

Emeritus Member

Full members who have reached the age of 75 may apply for the adjustment to the Emeritus Member category. Emeritus members have all the privileges of Full Members.

Honorary Member

Individuals with a record of high achievement and singular contributions to the fields of pulmonary and/or critical care medicine may be proposed for Honorary membership by any member, and upon recommendation by the Membership Committee, may be elected by the membership of the Society. Honorary Members have all the privileges of Full Members with the exception of voting and holding office. Honorary members do not pay annual dues.

ATS Affiliate

Individuals who have a demonstrated interest in the activities of the Society, and who do not qualify for membership in the Society in any of the existing membership categories, may apply to the Membership Committee to become ATS affiliates.
