Philip Hopewell, MD, is an internist in San Francisco, California, and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including UCSF Medical Center and the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. A past president of the ATS, Dr. Hopewell has received major funding to study tuberculosis control internationally from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He has worked closely with the World Health Organization, United States Agency for International Development, and other organizations to establish and disseminate best practices on TB diagnosis, treatment, and control. Dr. Hopewell chaired the committee that produced the first international standards for TB care and is now leading the effort to implement these standards in countries with the world's highest tuberculosis rates.
