"The ATS Mentoring program provides a wonderful opportunities for Early Career attendees to meet with more established members of the ATS. It is great for networking, career advice and research collaborations. I have made great collegial and academic friends through this program - both as a mentee and as a mentor." - Charles Dela Cruz, MD, PhD, ATSF
The PI-TB Mentoring Program is now hybrid, participants can connect virtually or in person at the ATS International Conference.
This Mentoring Program is a fantastic opportunity for all early-career PI-TB members (mentees) to meet with an assigned senior PI-TB members (mentors) and get some great one-on-one advice!
The program's mission is to welcome new members to the PI-TB Assembly and the ATS International Conference, help make our assembly and huge ATS meeting feel smaller and more personal for new/early career attendees, and create a supportive community for the development of the next generation of students, physicians and investigators.
The goals and expectations of the mentor and mentee are outlined below::
Expectations for Mentors
The key role of the mentor is to direct the mentee's professional development and provide career guidance. The mentor may discuss research opportunities, offer advice on finding mentorship/guidance, and provide tips on how to establish collaborations.
- Introduce yourself and start a dialog with the assigned mentee via phone, email, or social networking media before the ATS International Conference.
- The mentor may offer advice in course work or research training, and provide constructive feedback if this is an area the mentee requests it.
- The mentor should help establish a strategy for a mentees' career development. Mentorship can extend beyond this initial meeting if the Mentor and Mentee choose to, but that is not mandatory.*
Expectations for Mentees
- It is the responsibility of the mentee to reach out to the mentor to start the mentorship. Introduce yourself and start a dialog with the assigned mentor via phone, email, or social networking media before the ATS International Conference.
- The mentee should prepare a short bio and CV to share with the mentor, either by email prior to your first meeting or during the first meeting.
- The mentee should identify developmental needs and set development goals prior to the meeting. At a minimum, prior to meeting with the mentor, the mentee should write down three goals for the discussion.
Anyone can sign-up to be a mentor, but mentees should be in training or under five years out of their terminal training program. Prospective mentors and mentees will be asked to provide us with some brief information about scholarly activities, research, and goals to facilitate the pairings in an online survey (which takes less than 5 minutes to complete).
Meetings between mentors and mentees can occur virtually or at any time during the ATS conference that is convenient for both parties. There will be a designated Mentoring Meeting Spot at the conference.
We would like to thank the volunteer mentors in advance for their participation in this program. We realize how valuable everyone's time is. Your dedication and generosity will ensure the continued success of ATS and the PI-TB Assembly.
